𨳊 (gau1) – explanation and use

WARNING! 小心! Some of the articles on this site contain words which may cause offence.

I found a series of articles by a random person on Facebook that seemed quite interesting. They depict the correct usage of certain swear words in Cantonese. All of the articles are written in Cantonese so I thought I’d have a go at translating them. The translation might not be entirely accurate.

I would also like to point out that this is a translation, the original document might not be entirely correct and some of the text might be slightly offensive. Where I don’t agree with the translation I have stated so.

此字是假借字,原本是一種雀鳥名,讀作溝。作粗口字時則讀作 gau1,意思和用法與「撚」字頗為相似:

ci2 zi6 si6 gaa2 ze3 zi6 ,jyun4 bun2 si6 jat1 zung2 zoek3 niu5 meng4  , {duk6 dau6} zok3 kau1 。zok3 cou1 hau2 zi6 si4 zak1 duk6 zok3 gau1,ji3 si1/3 wo4 jung6 faat3 jyu5 「 nan2 」zi6 po2 wai4 soeng1 ci5 :
The characters 九 or 鳩 are sometimes used in place of 𨳊。鳩 is actually borrowed from the name of a bird which has the same sound.  𨳊 is pronounced gau1.  The meaning of 𨳊 is the same as 𨶙,which means “penis”.

作名詞用,「陽具」的意思,量詞是「條」或「碌」。例子:留得碌鳩在,那怕冇春袋!(留得陽具在,不用擔心沒有春袋。)

zok3 ming4 ci4 jung6 ,「joeng4 geoi6 」dik1 ji3 si1 ,loeng6 ci4 si6 「 tiu4 」waak6 「luk1 」。lai6 zi2 :lau4 dak1 luk1 gau1 zoi6 , naa5 paa3 mou5 ceon1 doi6 !(lau4 dak1 joeng4 geoi6 zoi6 ,bat1 jung6 daam1 sam1 mut6 jau5 ceon1 doi6 。)
As a noun 𨳊 means “penis” and requires the measure word 條 (tiu4) or sometimes 琭 (luk1) which are used for long objects or planks.  For example: 留得碌鳩在,那怕冇春袋!(keep the penis, no need for the scrotum).

語氣助詞,本身無意思,用作加強語氣。例子:屌鳩你!(加強「屌你」的語氣。)

jyu5 hei3 zo6 ci4 ,bun2 san1 mou4 ji3 si1 ,jung6 zok3 gaa1 koeng4 jyu5 hei3 。lai6 zi2 :diu2 gau1 nei5 !(gaa1 koeng4 「diu2 nei5 」dik1 jyu5 hei3 。)
As a modal auxiliary it is used to strengthen the tone of a sentence (the way in which this is written implies that this use isn’t really correct / common).  The example uses it to show a strengthening of “fuck you”.

助詞,用作顛倒句子意思。例子:有鳩野玩(沒有東西玩。)

zo6 ci4 ,jung6 zok3 din1 dou2 geoi3 zi2 ji3 si1 。lai6 zi2 : jau5 gau1 je5 waan4(mut6 jau5 dung1 sai1 waan4 。)
The auxiliary form confuses the meaning of the sentence.

作形容詞,形容呆頭呆腦的樣子。例子:鳩下鳩下(呆滯笨拙。)

zok3 jing4 jung4 ci4 ,jing4 jung4 ngoi4 tau4 ngoi4 nou5 dik1 joeng6 zi2 。lai6 zi2 : gau1 haa6 gau1 haa6( ngoi4 zai6 ban6 zyut3 。)
As an adjective it can describe someone who is stupid.

形容詞,形容人奸狡無良,通常前面會加一個撚字。例子:條友仔好撚鳩(那人非常奸狡。)

jing4 jung4 ci4 ,jing4 jung4 jan4 gaan1 gaau2 mou4 loeng4 ,tung1 soeng4 cin4 min6 wui6 gaa1 jat1 go3 nan2 zi6 。lai6 zi2 : tiu4 jau5 zai2 hou2 nan2 gau1 ( naa5 jan4 fei1 soeng4 gaan1 gaau2 。)
As an adjective it can describe someone who is sly and undesirable.  Usually 一個𨶙 is added before.  For example: 條友仔好撚鳩 (the person is very crafty)

文法:

man4 faat3 :
Grammar

「鳩」字和「撚」字意思和性質非常相近,都是較少作單獨字句使用,多會夾雜在句子中加強語氣,文法與「撚」字相同。例子:

「 gau1 」zi6 wo4「 nan2 } 」zi6 ji3 si1 wo4 sing3 zat1 fei1 soeng4 soeng1 gan6 ,dou1 si6 gaau3 siu2 zok3 daan1 duk6 zi6 geoi3 sai2 jung6 ,do1 wui6  gaap3 zaap6 zoi6 geoi3 zi2 zung1 gaa1 koeng4 jyu5 hei3 ,man4 faat3 jyu5 「 nan2 」zi6 soeng1 tung4 。lai6 zi2 :
𨳊 together with 𨶙 have relatively similar meanings, and can be used solitarily within a sentence, however when used together they strengthen the tone and strength of the sentence.  The grammatical use of 𨳊 and 𨶙 is the same.  For example:

好悶呀!→好鳩悶呀!

hou2 mun6 aa3 !→ hou2 gau1 mun6 aa3 !

我話之你死→我話鳩知你死

ngo5 waa6 zi1 nei5 sei2 → ngo5 waa6 gau1 zi1 nei5 sei2

Some examples implying “you’re boring” and “I said you’re dead”.

作名詞用的更多例子:

zok3 ming4 ci4 jung6 dik1 gang3 do1 lai6 zi2 :
Examples of 𨳊 being used as a noun:

鳩細冇女要,鳩長俾狗趙。(陽具細小沒有女性會接受,陽具大則會被狗咬噬。)

gau1 sai3 mou5 neoi5 jiu3 , gau1 coeng4 bei2 gau2 ziu6 。(joeng4 geoi6 sai3 siu2 mut6 jau5 neoi5 sing3 wui3 zip3 sau6 ,joeng4 geoi6 daai6 zak1 wui6 bei6 gau2 ngaau5 sai6。)
Women don’t want small dicks, smaller than a dog.  The brackets say something about big dicks and a dogs bite.

作形容詞用的更多例子:

zok3 jing4 jung4 ci4 jung6 dik1 gang3 do1 lai6 zi2 :
Examples of 𨳊 being used as an adjective:

戇鳩鳩(愚昧笨拙。)

ngong6 gau1 gau1(jyu4 mui6 ban6 zyut3 。)
Fucking stupid dick.

戇撚鳩(同上)常

ngong6 nan2 gau1(tung4 soeng6 )soeng4
Same as above but with the addition of the term ordinary / common.

見的單獨字句應用:

gin3 dik1 daan1 duk6 zi6 geoi3 jing3 jung6 :
Using 𨳊 on its own within a sentence:

戇鳩(愚昧笨拙。)

ngong6 gau1 (jyu4 mui6 ban6 zyut3 。)
Fucking stupid.

鳩屎(形容人狡猾不實。)

gau1 si2 (jing4 jung4 jan4 gaau2 waat6 bat1 sat6 。)
Dick shit

好鳩雀躍(好的陽具應如同雀鳥般活躍。)

hou2 gau1 zoek3 joek6 (hou2 dik1 joeng4 geoi6 jing1 jyu4 tung4 zoek3 niu5 bun1 wut6 joek3 。)
A good penis is active in manner like a bird.  I’m not entirely sure about my translation.

Be warned about the use of these words.  In Hong Kong there are laws similar to those in the West about swearing in public.  You also don’t want to go round simply insulting people.  A lot of local people don’t use profanity and find it offensive, regardless of how it is used.
