𨶙 (lan2) – explanation and use

WARNING! 小心! Some of the articles on this site contain words which may cause offence.

I found a series of articles by a random person on Facebook that seemed quite interesting. They depict the correct usage of certain swear words in Cantonese. All of the articles are written in Cantonese so I thought I’d have a go at translating them. The translation might not be entirely accurate.

I would also like to point out that this is a translation, the original document might not be entirely correct and some of the text might be slightly offensive. Where I don’t agree with the translation I have stated so.

「撚」讀作 lan2。此字乃是假借字,「撚」字原來是指捏取、揉搓、撥弄之類的動作。而粗口「撚」字意思是:

「 nan2 } 」 duk6 zok3 lan2。ci2 zi6 naai5 si6 gaa2 ze3 zi6 ,「 nan2 」zi6 jyun4 loi4 si6 zi2 nip6 ceoi2 、 co1 、 but6 lung6 zi1 leoi6 dik1 dung6 zok3 。ji4 cou1 hau2 「 nan2 」zi6 ji3 si1 si6 :
撚 is pronounced “lan2” and written as 𨶙。For the purpose of this article the character 撚 has been used which is pronounced “nan2” in Jyutping.  The original character is unknown which was used as a substitute based on sound.  As a substitute 撚 can be used.  Originally 𨶙 means “penis”.  As profanity the word means:

作名詞用,「陽具」的意思,量詞是「條」或「碌」。例子:大家男兒一條撚(大家男性都是一條陽具。)語氣助詞,本身無意思,用作加強語氣。例子:玩撚完!(一切都完了!)

zok3 ming4 ci4 jung6 ,「joeng4 geoi6 」dik1 ji3 si1 ,loeng6 ci4 si6 「 tiu4 」waak6 「luk1 」。lai6 zi2 :daai6 gaa1 naam4 ji4 jat1 tiu4 nan2 (daai6 gaa1 naam4 sing3 dou1 si6 jat1 tiu4 joeng4 geoi6 。)jyu5 hei3 zo6 ci4 ,bun2 san1 mou4 ji3 si1 ,jung6 zok3 gaa1 koeng4 jyu5 hei3 。lai6 zi2 : waan4 nan2 jyun4 !(jat1 cai3 dou1 jyun4 liu5 !
As a noun 𨶙 means penis and uses the classifier 條 (tiu4), which is used for long narrow objects.  For example: [大家男兒一條撚] using the classifier before the noun.  As a modal auxiliary 𨶙 is used to strengthen the tone and meaning of the sentence (like using the word “fuck” or “fucking” in English).  For example: “play as fucking finished”.

助詞,用作顛倒句子意思。例子:有撚飯食!(沒有飯吃。)

zo6 ci4 ,jung6 zok3 din1 dou2 geoi3 zi2 ji3 si1 。lai6 zi2 : jau5 nan2 faan6 sik6 !(mut6 jau5 faan6 gat1 。)
As an auxiliary word it can confuse (change?) the sentence meaning.  For example: Have fucking food (飯食 or 食飯?).

Grammar:

就「撚」字的應用方式來說,用作單獨字句使用的比例較少。「撚」字通常會混雜在正規語言之間,幫助加強語氣。如果作名詞用,只需像普通名詞般使用即可,「撚」字作名詞用的例子:

zau6 「 nan2 」zi6 dik1 jing3 jung6 fong1 sik1 loi4 syut3 ,jung6 zok3 daan1 duk6 zi6 geoi3 sai2 jung6 dik1 bei2 lai6 gaau3 siu2 。「 nan2 」zi6 tung1 soeng4 wui6 wan6 zaap6 zoi6 zing3 kwai1 jyu5 jin4 zi1 gaan1 ,bong1 zo6 gaa1 koeng4 jyu5 hei3 。jyu4 gwo2 zok3 ming4 ci4 jung6 ,zi2 seoi1 zoeng6 pou2 tung1 ming4 ci4 bun1 sai2 jung6 zik1 ho2 ,「 nan2 」zi6 zok3 ming4 ci4 jung6 dik1 lai6 zi2 :
When used in a sentence it can change the way in which the sentence is interpreted.  When used by itself it has relatively less impact.  Usually 𨶙 is placed within a sentence to help strengthen the meaning.  If used as a noun 𨶙 is used as an ordinary noun. Uses of 𨶙 as a noun:

好大條撚 (很大條的陽具。)索女含撚好難忍 (漂亮的女郎含著陽具,令人很難忍受。)「撚」字所以最多人用,是因它用作詞氣助詞時易上口、最能填補句子的空隙。通常放在句子的形容詞、動詞或名詞之前,但不會放在句首,用作加強句子語氣,例子:

hou2 daai6 tiu4 nan2 (han2 daai6 tiu4 dik1 joeng4 geoi6 。)sok3 neoi5 ham4 nan2 hou2 naan4 jan2 (piu3 loeng6 dik1 neoi5 long4 ham4 zyu3 joeng4 geoi6 ,ling6 jan4 han2 naan4 jan2 sau6 。)「 nan2 」zi6 so2 ji5 zeoi3 do1 jan4 jung6 ,si6 jan1 taa1 jung6 zok3 ci4 hei3 zo6 ci4 si4 ji6 soeng5 hau2 、zeoi3 nang4 tin4 bou2 geoi3 zi2 dik1 hung1 kwik1 。tung1 soeng4 fong3 zoi6 geoi3 zi2 dik1 jing4 jung4 ci4 、dung6 ci4 waak6 ming4 ci4 zi1 cin4 ,daan6 bat1 wui5 fong3 zoi6 geoi3 sau2 ,jung6 zok3 gaa1 koeng4 geoi3 zi2 jyu5 hei3 ,lai6 zi2 :
The top two examples are basically just uses of 𨶙 as a noun, i.e. “very big dick” etc.  Most people use the word as an auxiliary word because it is easy and fluent.  𨶙 can be placed with a “gap” within a sentence, or between two objects within the sentence, in the same way as using “very” in English, usually placed into the sentence as an adjective, before or after a verb or noun.  Although it is unlikely to be placed at the front of a sentence.  It strengthens and reinforces the tone of the sentence, for example:

dung6 ci4 cin4 : m4 sik6 → m4 nan2 sik6( sik6 si6 dung6 ci4 。)

Examples of how 𨶙 is used as an adjective.  Note where 撚 is placed within the sentence.

另外「撚」字亦可以加入一句句子中,使該句成為反話,使用方法和「語氣助詞」差不多。例子:

ling6 ngoi6 「 nan2 」zi6 jik6 ho2 ji5 gaa1 jap6 jat1 geoi3 geoi3 zi2 zung1 , sai2 goi1 geoi3 sing4 wai4 faan2 waa6 ,sai2 jung6 fong1 faat3 wo4「jyu5 hei3 zo6 ci4 」caa1 bat1 do1 。lai6 zi2 :
In addition, 𨶙 can be added to the middle of a sentence, making the sentence ironic (ironic?!), to use this method in harmony (as a model auxiliary).  For example:

有用 → 有撚用 (沒有用的意思。)

jau5 jung6 → jau5 nan2 jung6 (mut6 jau5 jung6 dik1 ji3 si1 。)

係 → 係撚 (不是的意思。這個是特別例子,撚字很少會放在句末。)
hai6 → hai6 nan2 (bat1 si6 dik1 ji3 si1 。ze2 go3 si6 dak6 bit6 lai6 zi2 , nan2 zi6 han2 siu2 wui6 fong3 zoi6 geoi3 mut6 。)

Examples of how 𨶙 is used as an auxiliary.  Note where 撚 is placed within the sentence.

將「撚」字夾雜入一句句子的例子:

zoeng1 「 nan2 」zi6 gaap3 zaap6 jap6 jat1 geoi3 geoi3 zi2 dik1 lai6 zi2 :
When mixed together in a sentence:

→hou2 nan2 soeng2 gaau2 nan2 nin2 daai6 keoi5 lai4 waan4 waan4 wun6} !(loek6 jim4 leoi6 zeoi6 。)

Examples of how 𨶙 is used as an auxiliary.  Note where 撚 is placed within the sentence.

常見的單獨字句應用:

soeng4 gin3 dik1 daan1 duk6 zi6 geoi3 jing3 jung6 :
When solitarily used within a sentence:

含撚 (用口含著陽具。常用作辱罵他人,包括同性。)

ham4 nan2 (jung6 hau2 ham4 zyu3 joeng4 geoi6 。soeng4 jung6 zok3 juk6 maa6 taa1 jan4 ,baau1 kut3 tung4 sing3 。)
Suck dick (common insult, and can be used as an insult toward homosexuals).

Be warned about the use of these words.  In Hong Kong there are laws similar to those in the West about swearing in public.  You also don’t want to go round simply insulting people.  A lot of local people don’t use profanity and find it offensive, regardless of how it is used.
